Communication

Graduates with degrees in communication from The University of Scranton are currently employed in numerous professional fields including commercial advertising, public relations in the private and public sectors, radio programming and news, television audience research, newspaper reporting and editing, and teaching. Many students have gone on to law school.

Communication embraces the fields of broadcasting (radio and television), cable, film, journalism, advertising, public relations and speech. Students who major in Communication become knowledgeable about the subject matter from humanistic, scientific and global perspectives.

Planning for College

The University of Scranton encourages a strong college preparatory program in high school with a minimum of four years of English, three years of mathematics, social science and science, and at least two years of a foreign language with additional units taken in acceptable academic areas.

Communication at The University of Scranton

Program highlights of the communication program at The University of Scranton include the following:

  • seven full-time faculty members, sixof whom have their doctorate degrees, along with highly respected adjunct faculty members, some of whom also hold the Ph.D. degree
  • the opportunity to get valuable on-the-job experience through departmental internships at places such as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (AAA affiliated minor league baseball), The Scranton Times-Tribune, Times Leader and Citizen's Voice newspapers, and various radio and television stations just minutes away from campus.
  • students have a unique opportunity to serve as interns at the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) annual conventions through internship programs administered by the department internship director.
  • a curriculum designed to meet each student's individual goals
  • the opportunity to join the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), which gives students the chance to compete in national competitions. In past years, PRSSA an Ad Club students helped plan the University of Scranton's annual Communication Fair in April, which gave participants the chance to secure internships, take part in mock interviews and make contacts in the communication field. Professionals from public relations, advertising, radio and television, and journalism were in attendance.
  • the opportunity to write for The Aquinas, the campus newspaper, and Esprit, an award-winning campus literary journal, and the college yearbook, Windhover.
  • the chance to develop production, writing and verbal skills by working at the campus radio station, WUSR-FM (99.5), and for Royal Network News (RNN), the University's television studio.

Outcomes

Graduates with degrees in communication from The University of Scranton are currently employed in numerous professional fields including commercial advertising, public relations in the private and public sectors, radio programming and news, television audience research, newspaper reporting and editing, and teaching.

Some graduates have landed positions with WNEP-TV (ABC affiliate), The Scranton Times-Tribune, Moses Taylor Hospital, QVC, MTV, WOLF-TV, Sweda Advertising, and MSG while other students have done internships with HBO, ESPN, The David Letterman Show, Comcast, CNN and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

The communication major has also been found to be excellent preparation for law school and other graduate programs. The University of Scranton communication alumni can be found in not only local and regional businesses and companies, but in several media outlets in major markets.
