Environmental Science

Environmental science is a rapidly expanding field covering areas such as environmental toxicology, applied ecology, systems analysis, habitat assessment, conservation biology, restoration ecology, air and water quality monitoring, pollution migration, bioremediation, analytical environmental chemistry, green chemistry, and environmental protection.

Planning for College

The University of Scranton encourages a strong college preparatory program in high school with a minimum of four years of English, three years of mathematics, social science and science, and at least two years of a foreign language, with additional units taken in acceptable academic areas.

Environmental Science at The University of Scranton

The environmental science major at The University of Scranton is an interdisciplinary program of the biology and chemistry departments. The program has the following objectives:

  • to prepare students for entry-level positions (in the public or private sector) in the broad field of environmental analysis, compliance and technology
  • to prepare students for advanced study in environmental science, environmental studies and other related areas
  • to provide a sufficiently comprehensive science and liberal arts background to allow students to pursue advanced training or work in other fields that deal with environmental issues, environmental law, environmental health and environmental regulation in business and industry

The program provides a rigorous and comprehensive grounding in the biological, chemical and physical aspects of the natural environment, and in the analytical and instrumental techniques used to investigate environmental problems. Upper class students can choose to focus more closely on either the chemical or biological aspects of environmental science, and must complete either an undergraduate research project or an internship in environmental science. The program also is designed to expose students to the social, political, regulatory, economic and ethical concerns that are commensurate with defining and addressing environmental issues in today's world.

  • Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
  • Gentex Corporation, Carbondale, PA
  • The National Institute for Environmental Renewal, Mayfield, PA

Outcomes

Graduates of the environmental science program at The University of Scranton have accepted positions with companies such as Norwich Pharmaceutical, Certainteed Corporation, Quaker Chemical Corporation, Gateway National Recreation Area, Birdseng Environmental Consulting Group, AmeriCorps and Systems Integration and Research Environment Consulting.

Others are currently pursuing post-graduate study at Drexel University, Duke University, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and the University of New Hampshire.
