2011 Hyland Award Winner

Congratulations to our recipient of the 2011 Kathryn and Bernard Hyland Memorial Award for Excellence in Biology: Kristen Fenocchi.
Kristen is a double major in Biology and Neuroscience with minors in Biochemistry and English. She is a Presidential University Scholar. She is a member of the Honors Program. Her research centered on the effects of peroxynitrite on myelin basic protein expression and traffic in cultured embryonic brain cerebral and cerebellar neurons. She was awarded the Presidential University Summer Research Fellowship in 2009, and the Ellen Casey Award for honors research; she successfully defended her Honors Thesis in 2011. She has presented her research in venues such as East Coast Nerve Net and the NEPA Research Forum. She is graduating Summa Cum Laude.
In addition to all her research work, Kristen is an active member in the Biology Club, the Scranton Neuroscience Society, and the Scranton Emerging Leaders. Kristen belongs to numerous honors societies, including Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Beta Beta Beta, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Nu Rho Psi, and Sigma Tau Delta. She serves as a tutor at the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. Her service work spans a broad spectrum, from assisting the Cell Biology instructional labs, to volunteering at CMC, to volunteering at the Upward Bound visit in the summer of 2010, to helping with the Unified Science Center design (she is one of the few students who has actually spent time in the new construction project).
This coming fall, Kristen will be entering the Drexel University College of Medicine. We wish her the best of luck in her new career path!
The Kathryn and Bernard Hyland Memorial Award for Excellence in Biology is awarded to the graduating senior who displays outstanding academic credentials, scholarship (typically in the form of research), and service to the Biology Department. Kristen was selected by the Biology faculty from among a field of outstanding students in our department. Kristen's academic, research, and service credentials make her a prime choice for this award, and we are proud to call her one of our own.
Congratulations!
