The University Archives serves the administration and community of the University of Scranton by collecting, preserving, and making available records of permanent value. The University Archives, by authority of the university administration, is responsible for collecting and preserving records of legal, administrative, and fiscal value to protect the institution as a legal entity and promote its efficient management. Furthermore, the University Archives collects and preserves records that have historical value and provides access to this material, under controlled conditions and with some restrictions, to both the University community and to outside researchers. These records document the various functions of the University such as teaching, research, cultural activities, student life, and athletics, as well as the administrative functions needed to sustain the institution.
Series specific to the University Archives consist of three categories of records. Official archival records are created or received by University officials in the conduct of affairs. Semi-official records include the records and publications of University-sponsored student, alumni, and faculty associations or organizations. Related records consist of those created by University community members and reflect the life of the institution; faculty papers are an example.
The University Archives' collections are open, with certain restrictions, to members of the University community and to outside researchers. Certain record series are closed for extended periods of time to protect individual privacy or to protect the legal rights of the institution and its departments. Closed records can only be seen by authorized parties.
Special Collections and University Archives department is open Monday to Friday from 8:30-4:30. The department is located in Room 401 on the fourth floor of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Memorial Library.
