    Alumni in the News

  • Brian Shahum '00 is a contestant on the reality show, Americas Next Sports Star, airing in November.
    • Dear all,

After a very long wait, the first episode of Americas Next Sports Star is going to air in a couple weeks!!!!!  This is the Basketball Reality show that I tried out for last year in Brooklyn, New York.

On Tuesday November 3, 2009 at 6:00 pm EST Americas Next Sports Star will air on the TV Station Versus (VS) (http://www.versus.com/ --- you can scroll down and find what channel VS is in your area).  The show will run for 8 episodes and they will announce the overall winner on the final episode.

If you get a chance, check out the show and visit the website to vote for your favorite Basketball Player!  The website address is listed below.  I think once the show airs they will add a place where you can vote for the athlete you like best on the web.

Thank you so much for checking out the show.  Wish me luck!!!  Please feel free to pass along to anyone I missed or anyone that you think might be interested in watching.

      Best regards,

      Brian

Why stay in NEPA? “Northeastern PA is a great community. This is a very compassionate region, excited about the possibility of change in heath care. TCMC has an innovative curriculum that is unlike any other medical school. I would really like to practice in the area, so getting my medical education in NEPA is a logical step in my career path.  This is an area rich in academic history. There are many universities in the area, many of which are nationally acclaimed. On the other hand, concerts are brought into the area; there are cultural festivals and sports events, and we are close enough to take day trips to Philadelphia or New York City.“

Fun Fact: Mathewson was a Bishop O’Reilly High School Valedictorian and Presidential Scholar at the University of Scranton. She is a member of the American Medical Association and PA Medical Society.

The Emmy was the sixth major award for the episode, which is a record for CBS. Previous awards included a Polk award for Television Reporting, a Murrow award for investigative reporting, and a Loeb award for Distinguished Business and Financial Reporting.

  • Scranton Lacrosse Team sets example: Other Teams Collect Used Gear
    • The men’s and women’s Crusader lacrosse teams have been collecting used lacrosse equipment since they have been at school this semester. The teams gathered this past Tuesday to box up all the equipment they have assembled and sent it to a group called Fields of Growth International. The Fields of Growth International work primarily with the Batwa Pygmies of East Africa to bring sustainable agriculture and eco-tourism to the adults and the hope of education and joy of lacrosse to the children. Click on this link, www.fieldsofgrowthintl.org to see a brief video, from this short clip, you will get a small glimpse at how much joy these disadvantaged kids had playing lacrosse.

This idea stemmed from the Lacrosse Coach from Scranton who spent a summer working in Uganda. Since then various teams such as the Notre Dame, the University of Scranton, Dickinson College, Northwestern Women, Mountain Lakes NJ, Northport NY and CBA NJ have all joined in this attempt along with your Crusaders to help the less fortunate. These sports teams have donated various equipments to aid the children of East Africa. The Crusaders collected three large boxes containing, sticks, gloves, goggles, pads, nets, and balls to send to the Fields of Growth International. Significantly, every member of both the Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse teams participated.

The donations that the men and women Crusaders have collected will be given to children who will be more than delighted. The lacrosse equipment will allow the children to have an escape to play a favorite game and enjoy their youth. Coaches Kevin Meany and Kelly McCloskey hope that this is a tradition for future Crusaders to continue. Look to see these Crusaders in action in early spring as they begin play on the new turf field.
