Intercollegiate Athletics Within the Framework of a Jesuit Education

The Department of Athletics is an integral part of the Jesuit educational system. As coaches and staff, we are educators and mentors who take an active role in advising in the personal growth and development of the student-athlete. We are committed to the integration of learning with a healthy lifestyle and dedicated to the cultivation of student-athletes as leaders within the campus community and as graduates. Our student-athletes will develop their "potential into achievement" and make lasting contributions to the University by dedicating themselves in academics and athletics, making a commitment to enhancing the quality of campus life for this community and faithful service to others.

Philosophy of Athletics

The University of Scranton places its highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students' academic programs. The Department of Athletics seeks to establish and maintain a healthy environment, which exhibits fair and equitable treatment of men and women in which a student-athlete's intercollegiate athletic activities are an integral part of the educational experience. Participants in athletics should be able to pursue activities that allow them to develop increased levels of physical fitness and athletic skills, adhere to the sound principles of fair play and amateur athletics competition, acquire leadership skills, build confidence, and recognize that the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and ethical conduct through participation in athletics can have a life-long impact.

Student-athletes, through hard work and dedication, must maintain a balance between academics, social activities and athletics in order to participate in intercollegiate athletic competition. Social awareness, effective time management, self discipline and control, personal sacrifice and goal setting play an important part in a student-athlete's commitment to a program of academic, athletic and emotional success.

The Department of Athletics is especially concerned that student-athletes maintain a healthy lifestyle. Student-athletes must commit themselves to a program of wellness, exercise and skill development that promotes interpersonal and physical growth. Finally, through participation in intercollegiate athletics, student-athletes learn the value of teamwork, respect for others, selfless commitment, conflict resolution and emotional control.
