Banners placed along campus walkways are among the ways The University of Scranton will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador. Scranton hosted a lecture by Rev. Rodolfo Cardenal, S.J., former vice rector of the University of Central America, and has plans for a Latin American Film Series, Mass and other events to further the students' understanding of the relevance of an event that occurred before many of them were even born. According to University of Scranton President Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., "What happened at the University of Central America in 1989, as well as the need for continued solidarity with the third world, is critically important to Jesuit higher education and to our mission here at Scranton."
