The following items highlight the many alumni events and initiatives at The University of Scranton.

The Michael Mulhall ’10 Memorial 5K Fun Run

The University of Scranton Alumni Relations Office and friends and family of the late Michael Mulhall '10 joined efforts to organize the Michael Mulhall ’10 Memorial 5K Fun Run last month. More than 300 participants gathered on a beautiful Saturday afternoon on Sept. 15 at Nay Aug Park in Scranton to raise money for the Michael Mulhall ’10 Memorial Scholarship. Mulhall was a graduate of the class of 2010 who died in a car accident shortly after graduation. He was a much loved son, brother, and dear friend of many throughout our University’s community. The Michael Mulhall Memorial Scholarship is established for University of Scranton students pursuing a career in special education. Calling All Theatre and University Players Alumni!

Join us as we celebrate The University of Scranton's rich Theatre history on Saturday, Oct. 6! This is your last chance to register! It is $50 per person and includes dinner and admission to the "Prelude to a Kiss."

The schedule is as follows:

• 5 p.m. – Cocktails  
• 6 p.m. – Dinner
• 8 p.m. – "Prelude to a Kiss" by Craig Lucas  

"Prelude to a Kiss" is directed by Bob E. Gasper and features a special guest "Old Guy" cameo appearance by John McInerney, Ph.D. The event will be an opportunity for alumni who were active in The University Players and Theatre programs to reconnect. We welcome all alumni and friends to join us in this celebration of The University's excellence in Theatre. Register today!

Alumni Memorial Mass Scheduled Nov. 2

The University of Scranton will hold a special Alumni Memorial Mass on Friday, Nov. 2, at 6:30 p.m. in Madonna della Strada Chapel. University President Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., will serve as celebrant. We will remember in a special way all alumni who have passed away this year. All are welcome.

Father Masterson Remembered

A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Rev. Thomas Masterson, S.J., 
was held on Sept. 22, in Madonna Della Strada Chapel. Fellow Jesuits, alumni and friends of Father Masterson came together to remember the significant contributions he made to The University of Scranton and its students over the years.  

Father Masterson entered eternal life on Aug. 27 at Manresa Hall in Merion Station. Fr. Masterson, who was 78, had been a Jesuit for 61 years and a priest for 48.

The son of Louise E. Quigley and Daniel S. Masterson of Washington, D.C., he was born Sept. 30, 1933. Following graduation from Gonzaga College High School near Capitol Hill, he entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville. He pronounced first vows Aug. 15, 1953. He was ordained June 14, 1964, at Woodstock College. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in history from Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, N.Y., in 1957, and a master's degree in teaching history from Fordham University in 1959. He also earned his licentiate in 1953 and bachelor's degree in 1965, both in sacred theology at Woodstock College, in Woodstock, Md.

After further studies, this time at Georgetown University, Fr. Masterson earned his master's degree in 1969 and his Ph.D. in 1976, both in American history. Later, in 2001-2002, he took a sabbatical at Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. As a Jesuit scholastic, Fr. Masterson was assigned to Loyola High School in Towson, 1958-1961, where he taught English, Latin and religion. From 1973 to 1976 he was assigned as minister of Campion House, a students’ dormitory at Georgetown University in Washington.

Fr. Masterson began his long tenure at The University of Scranton in 1976, serving as a  professor of history from 1976 to 2004. He was also director of campus ministry from 1976 to 1991. Then he served as vice president for university ministry at the University from 1991 to 2002. He was the chaplain for the rugby team and a committed member of the University SEARCH retreat community. He resided in Redington Hall and was a vibrant member of the Jesuit community. In 2003, he suffered a debilitating stroke and spent his final years praying for the church and the works of the Society of Jesus. Fr. Masterson once communicated to Fr. Brendan Lally that, even though the stroke had left him severely speech impaired, he was content and peaceful. May Fr. Masterson rest in peace.
