Diversity Fair Showcases the Many Faces of Scranton

Students, faculty and staff learned Swahili and took salsa dance lessons while student representatives from countries including Korea, India, Thailand, Mexico and El Salvador provided cultural and geographical information and shared native artwork at the 2009 Diversity Fair. More than 200 participated in the program intended to raise awareness of diversity on Scranton’s campus.

Film Festival Commemorates Fall of Berlin Wall

The German Film Festival hosted by The University of Scranton marked the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. World Languages and Cultures Professor Jamie Trnka, Ph.D., who organized the series, presented the first of three films “Leipzig in the Fall” on Nov. 9 in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall.

  • The 3rd Annual Blessing of the Books is Underway
    • We are requesting donations of new and gently used books for toddlers through young teen years.  If books have been a blessing In your life, please consider donating a book as a way to pass the blessing on to others.  The generosity of The University of Scranton community in the 2007 and 2008 Blessing of the Books enabled the distribution of over 3,200 books to needy children in our local community and beyond.

      Purple donation boxes are located on the first floor of: McGurrin, Leahy, Hyland, STT, Library, DeNaples, Condron and in the EXSC wing of the Long Center.  If you want to personalize your donated book, bookplates for that purpose can be found in the donation boxes.

      Please join us on December 1 at 3:30 pm, McGurrin Lobby, as Father Scott Pilarz, S.J. blesses the collected books prior to their distribution.

  • University Advent Liturgy and Tree Lighting
    • Sunday, November 29th at 5:00 PM, Byron Center
      All members of the University Community are invited to attend this annual tradition of celebrating the First Sunday of Advent.  The liturgy concludes with a candlelit procession to the Dionne Green for the lighting of the Christmas Tree.  Students returning to campus from Thanksgiving break are encouraged to invite their families to the Mass.

      November 21 – The Greater Scranton Jaycees Santa Parade needs balloon carriers, traffic helpers, sign holders, etc.  7:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. in downtown Scranton.   This is an outdoor event.  Dress appropriately. Volunteers meet at the Scranton Job Center at Franklin and Spruce (there will be a tent where the volunteer coordinator will be set up).  More info contact president@scrantonjaycees.org

      November 22- CCHF Perkey Turkey 5K run with Compassionate Care Hospice.  From 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., help set up, clean up event, hand out snacks, run around!  Contact Becky Klepadlo at bklepadlo@cchnet.net

      November 24- Friends of the Poor Thanksgiving Dinner at the Scranton Cultural Center.  Peel potatoes, set and decorate tables, carve, serve and carry, clean up.  9:30-a.m.-9:00 p.m.  Contact 570-348-4428.

      The evening's program includes music written by composers from a variety of Eastern European traditions, including works by Rimsky Korsakov, Gliere, Shostakovich, Tschesnokoff, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, and Nelhybel. This year celebrates the 90th anniversary of the birth of Vaclav Nelhybel, who was composer-in-residence at the university at the time of his death in 1996, and whose more than 700 works in both manuscript and published form are housed in The Nelhybel Collection at The University of Scranton.
      The University of Scranton Concert Band is an 80 member ensemble, with students from majors spanning the curriculum all brought together by their shared commitment to making music.

  • Annual Intersession Ski/Snowboard Trip!
    • The University of Scranton Mountain Sports Club is going to Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, NY for our Annual Intersession Ski/Snowboard trip!  We will depart from Scranton on January 5th and return January 8th.  The trip includes 2 days of skiing/snowboarding at Whiteface Mountain, 3 nights at the High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid, and transportation to and from Lake Placid.  The cost of the trip is $260.  This trip is open to University of Scranton students, faculty, and staff.  For more information or to reserve a spot, please contact Lauren Hahn, MSC treasurer, at hahnL4@scranton.edu.

    • The Staff Senate website www.scranton.edu/staffsenate has been updated with a new page titled "Meeting Minutes" located at the left hand navigation.  The new Meeting Minutes page contains links to PDF versions of minutes from all previous Staff Senate meetings since April 9, 2008.  If you're interested in the activities of the Staff Senate, feel free to browse the newly posted information.

  • IT Fall Forum
    • The next IT Forum for the Fall 2009 semester is scheduled for Tuesday, November 24, 2009 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Rose Room, Brennan Hall Room 509.  Our focus this month will be on Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 7.

  • The Committee on the Status of Women Open Forum
    • The Committee on the Status of Women will be having an Open Forum on Thursday, November 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the PNC Bank Board Room, Brennan 500.  Information was sent to all female employees, but we welcome male attendees, as well.  The topic is COMMUNITY SAFETY, an issue with which we are all concerned.  Mr. Timothy Briggs, Public Safety, will be the presenter.  If you have any questions you want discussed, you can: 1) send them prior to the forum to Dr. Marian Farrell, 2) deposit them in a box at the site, or 3) ask them at the time of the presentation.  Lunch will be provided.  Space is limited.  Please send your reservation ASAP to farrellm1@scranton.edu

      AMERICAN WATER WORKS ASSOCIATION
      PENNSYLVANIA SECTION

      The Pennsylvania Section of the AWWA encourages study in fields
      relating to the water supply industry and is offering $2,000
      scholarships to eligible students. Students are eligible to apply if:
      1.    They have completed one semester of the college junior year or
      they are a college senior or graduate level student.
      2.    They are pursuing or planning to pursue a degree in
      engineering, biology, chemistry, business administration or other
      field which may lead to a career in the water supply industry.
      3.    They are attending a Pennsylvania college or maintain a
      permanent residence in Pennsylvania.

  • Summer Study Abroad in Florence Italy
    • Drs. Virginia Picchietti and Marzia Caporale of the Department of World
      Languages and Cultures are happy to announce the Summer Study Abroad in
      Florence, Italy, in June 2010. Students will enroll in courses and live
      in Florence for the duration of the program. The program will also
      include day trips to other exciting Italian destinations. Applicants
      must be in good standing at the University of Scranton and must meet GPA
      requirements.  Applications due on or before December 1. For more

  • Residence Hall Thanksgiving Schedule
    • On Campus Houses, Apartments and Residence Halls Close on Wednesday,
      November 25 at Noon for Thanksgiving Break.
      On Campus Housing re-opens on Sunday, November 29 at Noon.

      Dining Information -
      The Fresh Food Company (3rd Floor of DeNaples) closes on Tuesday,
      November 24 at 2:30 p.m. and re-opens on Sunday, November 29 at  4:45 p.m.
      The 1st floor Food Court and Convenience Store closes on Wednesday,
      November 25  at 2:00 p.m. and opens on Sunday, November 29 at 4:00 p.m..

      All residents are required to complete the following closing procedures -
      *Clean your room (i.e. remove trash/clean out personal refrigerators).
      *Remove any items that may spoil over break (i.e. milk, bread, etc.).
      *Close and lock all windows.
      *Pull down and close blinds.
      *Turn off all lights.
      *Close and lock room door.
      *Last person to leave, sign the "We're Outta Here" form and place on the
      outside of the door.

      Residents are not permitted to stay on campus during the Thanksgiving

  • Information Session on Alternative Spring Break Trips
    • The Community Outreach Office will be conducting an information session on Thursday, November 19 from 12-12:45 p.m. in the Moskovitz Theater, 4th Floor DeNaples for Alternative Spring Break Trips (3/13-3/20).  Trips this year are being planned for SanDiego CA, Chicago IL, Philadelphia PA and KY.  Volunteers will be doing work with homeless outreach, housing rehab, at risk youth, and social justice issues.  Applications will be handed out at the meeting and participants will chosen by lottery.  Items of discussion will be costs, transportation, waivers, fundraising, etc.  For more information, please contact Pat Vaccaro at vaccarop1@scranton.edu or by stopping by The Community Outreach Office, DeNaples 205B.

    • Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) will be hosting an "Ethics in
      Advertising" Seminar on Friday, November 20th  from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  A panel of guests from the advertising industry  will speak to students about
      ethical decisions facing advertising industry.  The event will take place in the Moskovitz Theater, DeNaples Center room 401.  All are invited to attend this event
