University’s Scholars in Service Active at Area’s Nonprofit Agencies

The Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania (SISPA) program is a federal government sponsored AmeriCorps program.

Seven University of Scranton students have been recognized as AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania for the 2012-2013 academic year. Each scholar volunteers primarily with one or two area nonprofit organizations and commits to completing 300 or 450 hours of individual service in the community during the academic year.

Some of this year’s service sites include the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA, Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten, St. Joseph’s Center and Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania.
In addition to each student’s individual service site, the scholars also assist with numerous campus-wide service opportunities. These events are organized by the University’s Center for Service and Social Justice and often benefit area residents in need.

Scholar in Service Brian Dolan ’15, a nursing major, chose to work with the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, a residential nursing facility for the elderly. As a nursing major, he is gaining experience from interacting with elderly patrons. He assists in feeding people at the home who cannot move their arms easily.
