The University of
Scranton Will Present Honorary Degrees to Five
The University of Scranton
will award honorary degrees to leaders in the media, government, education and
Catholic church during commencement ceremonies on May 25 and May 26.
Lisa Myers, chief Congressional correspondent for NBC News; Monsignor Santiago
Méndez Bravo, president of La Universidad del Valle de Atemejac (UNIVA);
and U. S. Rep. John Murtha, will receive honorary degrees at its undergraduate
commencement, which begins at noon on Sunday, May 26, at the First Union Arena
at Casey Plaza, Wilkes-Barre. Ms Myers will deliver the principal address at
the undergraduate ceremony.
Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and
Society at Fordham University, and Sr. Anne Munley, I.H.M., president of the
Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Scranton, will receive honorary degrees at the university's graduate school
commencement on Saturday, May 25, at 11:30 a.m. in the Byron Recreation
Complex. Cardinal Dulles will be the principal speaker for the graduate school
commencement.

An internationally known author and
lecturer, Cardinal Dulles, is currently a consultor to the Committee on
Doctrine of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and an associate fellow
of the Woodstock Theological Center in Washington, D.C. He was created a
Cardinal of the Catholic Church on Feb. 21, 2001, by Pope John Paul II, thus
becoming the first U.S. theologian named to the College of Cardinals.
Cardinal Dulles has an impressive collection of awards, including Phi Beta
Kappa, the Croix de Guerre, the Cardinal Spellman Award for distinguished
achievement in theology and the Boston College Presidential Bicentennial Award.
He will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from The University of
Scranton.

Sr. Munley is one of two delegates from the
United States to the International Union of Superiors General (UISG). She
served as the facilitator of the UISG 2001 Plenary and as chairperson of the
plenary planning committee which represents nearly one million women religious
from five continents. She has also served for three years as President of the
Leadership Conference of Women Religious.
Sr. Munley will be presented an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane
Letters.

Ms. Myers, who is a senior member of NBC's
award-winning political team, reports on the nation's government for all of NBC
News broadcasts, including "The Nightly News with Tom Brokaw,"
"Dateline NBC" and "Today." She is a regular contributor to
NBC's "Fleecing of America" news segment and routinely participates
as a member of the roundtable discussion group of "Meet the Press."
Critically praised for her work as a reporter, Ms. Myers received a Hess Report
Award for campaign coverage in 2000 and was a contributor to the Nightly News
broadcast given the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast for its broadcast
the day following the November 2000 election.
The University will present Ms. Myers with an honorary degree of Doctor of
Humane Letters at the undergraduate commencement ceremony.

In his role as President of UNIVA,
headquartered in Guadalajara, Mexico, Monsignor Méndez Bravo, directs a
university with whom The University of Scranton has a formal agreement to
promote the exchange of faculty and students. He is currently and has been an
advisor for numerous organizations and associations, including the
InterAmerican Universities Organization, the Federation of Mexican Private
Institutes of Higher Education and the Mexican Association of Christian Further
Education Institutes. He was ordained a priest by the Diocesan Seminary in
Guadalajara in 1952 and was appointed Monsignor by Pope John Paul II in 2001.
Monsignor Méndez Bravo will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of
Pedagogy.

In 1974, John Murtha became the first
combat Vietnam veteran elected to the United States Congress. Over his nearly
thirty years representing Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District,
Congressman Murtha has become a national leader on defense, health care and
social issues. He holds a senior position on the Appropriations Committee and
is a ranking member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. He has received
numerous awards, including the Panetta Institute's Jefferson Lincoln Award for
Bipartisan Leadership and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry's
Government Leader of the Year.
Congressman Murtha will receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Law.
