Appoints Graduate School Dean and Director of Research
Duncan M. Perry, Ph.D., has
been named dean of the Graduate School and director of research at The
University of Scranton effective July 1.
"Dr. Perry brings to The University of Scranton a broad base of experience
that will be pivotal to the university's efforts to further enhance its
Graduate School," said Beth E. Barnett, Ed.D., provost and academic vice
president of The University of Scranton.
Dr. Perry is currently the dean for graduate studies and extended programs at
Millersville University, Millersville, Pa. He was previously dean for graduate
studies and research and professor of history at Central Washington University,
Ellensburg, Wash.
Upon the invitation of Radio Free Europe, he served as a senior Balkan analyst
in Munich, Germany, and later founded the Open Media Research Institute in
Prague, in the Czech Republic.
He previously served as the graduate dean at the University of North Dakota,
Grand Forks, N.D., assistant dean for graduate studies at the University of
Maryland, College Park, Md.; and personnel officer and director of graduate
academic records at the H.H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Dr. Perry's impressive record of scholarship has focused primarily on Eastern
Europe, and includes books and articles on issues facing the Balkans. Among his
numerous scholarly awards and fellowships are a Woodrow Wilson Center Research
Fellowship in its Eastern European Program, two Fulbright awards for study in
Bulgaria and two fellowships from the Bulgarian Academic Sciences.
"I am sure that the depth of Dr. Perry's academic and practical experience
in the area of international programming will prove to be an enormous asset to
the university and its more than 100 international students," said Dr.
Barnett.
Dr. Perry holds a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Davis
and Elkins College in Elkins, W. Va; a master's degree in Russian language and
linguistics from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio; a second master's degree in
European history from Ohio University; and doctorate in Balkan history from the
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
The Graduate School at The University of Scranton offers 22 master's programs
in the areas of healthcare, education, business, research, counseling, human
resources, chemistry, computers and technology. The university's graduate
programs are accredited by the most rigorous accrediting organizations,
including AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business.
