07/19 - University of Scranton Appoints Associate Provost for Academic Affairs

Jem Spectar, Ph.D., has been appointed associate provost for academic affairs at The University of Scranton, effective July 15.

The associate provost reports directly to and works with the university's provost and academic vice president and is responsible for operations in areas that include faculty development, international programming, program planning and curriculum review.

"A man of great faith and ability, Dr. Spectar's determination to excel has brought him much success," said Beth E. Barnett, Ed.D., provost and academic vice president at The University of Scranton. "His commitment to excellence matches well with the university's and will make him a valuable asset to our academic community."

A native of Cameroon on Africa's West Coast, Dr. Spectar emigrated to the United States as a teenager. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of La Verne, La Verne, Calif. He holds two masters' degrees, one in political science from George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and an MBA from Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Md. He earned a doctorate in political science from Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, Calif., and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland Law School, Baltimore, Md. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar.

Prior to joining The University of Scranton, Dr. Spectar was the director of studies at Princeton University's Rockefeller College, where he also taught the Freshman Seminar Program. Dr. Spectar also served as assistant dean of students and associate professor of law at the University of La Verne. There he was awarded the Professor of Distinction Award in 1998 and the Professor of the Year Award in 1995.

Dr. Spectar has published numerous articles on topics of international law and political science.
