09/19 - University of Scranton Names Six Trustees

Six new members have been elected to three-year terms on The University of Scranton's Board of Trustees.

Louis D. DeNaples, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., Mary Beth Farrell, Margaret M. Condron, Ph.D., John E. Brennan, George V. Lynett, Esq., and U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood will begin their terms at the Sept. 24, 2002, board meeting.

Dr. DeNaples has served as director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Community Medical Center, Scranton, since 1998. He is also president of Emergency Services, P.C., # One Mulberry Street Corp., North American Warhorse, Inc., and vice chairman of the Board of Directors of the Community's Bank and Urban Financial Group, Inc., Bridgeport, Conn.

Dr. DeNaples is board-certified in emergency medicine and is a fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is a diplomat on the National Board of Medicine and is licensed in advanced cardiac and trauma life support, pediatric advanced life support and basic life support.

He serves on several committees at CMC, including the Medical Executive Committee, Capital Budget Committee, Pre-Medical Student Preceptorship Program and the Trauma Multidisciplinary Committee.

His professional memberships include the Emergency Medicine Residents Association and the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is the recipient of the House Officer Teaching Award at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mich., and the Vice President Medical Affairs-Physician Leadership Award at CMC.

Dr. DeNaples earned a bachelor of science degree from The University of Scranton in 1989. He earned a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1993, and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Henry Ford Hospital in 1996.

Ms. Farrell, New York, N.Y., is executive vice president, finance and administration services of AXA Client Solutions, LLC. Before joining AXA, Ms. Farrell was employed as senior vice president and controller for GreenPoint Bank. She has also been employed by Citibank, where she held several positions, including director of accounting policy and taxes for Citicorp FSB in Chicago, Ill., and by KPMG Peat Marwick, where she was senior audit manager.

Ms. Farrell was elected recently to the National Board of the Alumni Society of The University of Scranton and has spoken at the Society of Accounting Students dinner on the university's campus.

She graduated in 1979 from The University of Scranton with a bachelor of science degree in accounting.

Dr. Condron is a member of the adjunct faculty in the Natural Sciences Department at Marymount Manhattan College. Prior to joining their staff, she taught at several schools, including Marymount School, Boston College, Newton Country Day School and Boston University. She was also president/principal of Environmental Communications Services, Inc., RPI Incubator Center, Troy, N.Y.; a research associate on the New York State Legislative Commission on Hazardous Waste; a partner at Environmental Compliance Consultants; and a chemist at the Campbell Soup Co.

Her professional publications include In Search of Progress: A Critical Review of the New York State Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program and The Siting of Commercial Hazardous Waste Facilities: A National Survey.

A resident of New York, N.Y., Dr. Condron is a member of the Board of Trustees at Marymount School and has been an associate director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society since 1994. She has also been a member of the Science Advisory Board - TURO Program - for the state of Massachusetts and the Allegheny County Air Pollution Advisory Board. She served as chair for the Natural Resources Board of the League of Women Voters.

After receiving a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Loyola University in 1969, Dr. Condron earned a master of business administration degree in strategic planning from the University of Pittsburgh in 1982. She also attended the Graduate School of Public Health's Environmental and Industrial Health Program at the University of Pittsburgh. She earned a doctorate in environmental studies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1990.

Mr. Brennan, a resident of New York, N.Y., is vice chairman of the board of Southern Union Co., the 14th largest natural gas distribution company in the United States, based in Austin, Texas. He is also president, treasurer and director of Activated Communications, Inc., a broad-based communications firm with headquarters in New York City. In addition, Mr. Brennan is president and chief executive officer of Paging Dimensions, Inc., a license paging operator in Orange, Calif.

Mr. Brennan is a 1968 graduate of The University of Scranton, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business management. Brennan Hall, dedicated in 2000, is named after Mr. Brennan in recognition of his lifelong commitment to the University. The building houses the University's Kania School of Management, and provides technologically advanced conference space for the university community and businesses and organizations throughout northeastern Pennsylvania.

Mr. Brennan is the former president and chief operating officer of Metro Mobile CTS, Inc. He was also vice president of operations of Metro Mobile Communications, Inc., of which he was a co-founder. Before starting Metro Mobile, he was employed by Motorola Communications and Electronics, and Lin Broadcasting.

Following graduation from The University of Scranton, Mr. Brennan attended Officer Candidate School and served for two years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps., where he held the rank of lieutenant.

Mr. Lynett, a resident of Scranton, is the publisher of the Times-Tribune, Scranton, secretary/treasurer of Shamrock Communications, Inc., Scranton, and president of the Towanda Daily Review.

He is a co-chairman of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce's Scranton Plan, and vice chairman of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association. He is a board member of First Union 5-State Regional Advisory Board, First Union Regional Foundation Board, First Union Northeastern PA Regional Board, Scranton Tomorrow, the Scranton Area Foundation Board of Trustees, The Union Leader (Manchester, NH), the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute and the Greater Valley Alliance.

His professional memberships include the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Lackawanna County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association.

His former community and civic affiliations include chairman of The University of Scranton Annual Fund Campaign, president of the Board of Governors of Scranton Preparatory School, and chairman of the annual Lackawanna County Cancer Crusade.

Mr. Lynett is a 1965 graduate of College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., and a 1971 graduate of The University of Scranton, where he earned a master of business administration degree. He earned his juris doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, DC, in 1978. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1967.

Congressman Sherwood represents Pennsylvania's 10th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee; the Subcommittee on Labor, Health & Human Services, and Education; the Treasury, Postal Service and General Government Subcommittee; and the Legislative Branch Subcommittee. He also served on the Armed Services Committee, the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and the Resources Committee. Congressman Sherwood was first elected to the 10th District seat in 1998, following the retirement of U.S. Rep. Joseph M. McDade. He was re-elected in 2000.

Congressman Sherwood began his public service career in 1975, when he was appointed to the Tunkhannock Area School Board. He was elected six times to the board, serving as its president from 1992 to 1998. Prior to that, he founded Sherwood Chevrolet in 1967 and established several other businesses and partnerships in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Congressman Sherwood is a 1963 graduate of Dartmouth College, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics. He served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, Pueblo Army Depot, Colorado, and in Panama.
