10/1 - University of Scranton to Host Law Fair

The University of Scranton will host its 17th annual Law School Fair Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in Eagen Auditorium of the Gunster Memorial Student Center. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

Approximately 25 law schools will be represented, including Albany Law School, Catholic University, Duquesne University, Notre Dame University, Seton Hall University, St. Louis University, Temple University, Villanova University, New York University and Widener University.

The fair gives students from all local colleges and universities the opportunity to learn more about participating institutions and to meet representatives from each, according to Constance F. McDonnell, assistant director of Career Services at the university. Students can obtain catalogs and applications from each school at the fair. Representatives from admissions test preparations services will also be available.

Even as the number of law school applicants has risen dramatically over the past few years, University of Scranton graduates continue to gain admission at a higher rate than their counterparts nationwide. Since 1998, an average of about 77 percent of the university's graduates who applied to law school has been accepted. This compares to a national average of just 68 percent. Preliminary reports on applicants from the Class of 2002 indicate that approximately 75 percent were accepted. In just the past three years, university graduates have won acceptance to several of the nation's leading law schools, including Harvard, New York University, Notre Dame University and Stanford University.

The university will host a panel discussion on the law school application process from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 30 in Collegiate Hall in Redington Hall, corner of Linden Street and North Webster Avenue,. Frank Homer, Ph.D., professor of history and director of the Pre-Law Advisory Program at the university, will moderate the discussion, which will include questions from the audience. This session is also open to the public free of charge.
