10/3 - Women Entrepreneurs Honored at Small Business Development Center Award Luncheon

The University of Scranton's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will present its annual Award for Women Entrepreneur (AWE) to one of four nominees at a luncheon on Tuesday, October 22, 2002. Susan Swain, co-chief operating officer of C-SPAN, will be the featured speaker.

The four nominees for the 2002 AWE are: Sunita Arora, Realtec-One Source Realty, Clarks Summit; Betty Covey, Covey Realty Group, Lake Ariel; Daisy Gallagher, Gallagher and Gallagher, Inc., Stroudsburg; and Jocelyn Kreig, Sunshine and Rainbows Day Car Center, Moosic.

A 1976 graduate of The University of Scranton, Ms. Swain is responsible for C-SPAN's daily editorial operations. In addition, she is a long-time on-air moderator for the Washington Journal and is a collaborator on special programming for the network.

Prior to joining C-SPAN, Ms. Swain worked for TV-22 in Scranton, as well as with an educational-based performance group called "Up with People" which toured the world. After returning to the United States she became a communications consultant for the government and eventually moved to Washington, D.C.

In 1982, she became a producer at the upstart C-SPAN, which had been formed in 1979 to provide complete coverage of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ms. Swain received an honorary degree from The University of Scranton is 1999. Ms. Swain has also served on The University of Scranton Board of Trustees from 1993 to 1999.

While on campus Ms. Swain will meet with University of Scranton Business Leadership Students.

The AWE luncheon will begin at noon in the 5th floor Executive Center of Brennan Hall, Madison Avenue. Fleet Bank is the corporate sponsor for the event.
