FORMER U.S. OLYMPIAN PAT POWERS TO PRESENT VOLLEYBALL CLINIC AT LONG CENTER
Former men's volleyball Olympic gold medalist Pat Powers will present a three-day skills clinic at the John J. Long, S.J., Center on the campus of The University of Scranton on Monday, August 12, through Wednesday, August 14.
Powers has enjoyed a highly successful career as both a player and a coach. A two-time all-American at the University of Southern California, he led the Trojans to the NCAA championship in 1980. He earned a gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and was a gold medalist on the 1985 World Cup and 1986 World Championship teams. He was voted the best blocker and spiker on the American Volleyball Professional tour in 1988 and was co-most valuable player (MVP) with Karch Kiraly in 1986. He was also a member of the U.S. National Team for nine years (1978-1986) and was a standout on the pro beach circuit.
As head coach at USC from 1997-2002, he led the Trojans to a 106-82 (.564) record. During the 2000 season, USC went 26-6, shared the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Pacific Division title and spent two weeks ranked number one in the nation before finishing fourth.
"Unlike other clinics, this clinic is very technique oriented," says Powers. "I have developed a system of teaching that over-corrects flaws and weaknesses. I have spent nineteen years playing at the highest level and the last six coaching. I have developed a program that enables both the junior and advanced player to learn in a comfortable non-intimidating environment."
The clinic, which runs from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm daily, is $125.00 per person. For more information, please contact Kristin Maile at (570) 941-4050, or by e-mail at kristin.maile@scranton.edu.
