HANDLEY, WOLFSBERGER NAMED ASSISTANT COACHES
Toby Lovecchio, director of athletics at The University of Scranton, has announced the appointments of Ray Handley as assistant field hockey coach and Heidi Wolfsberger as assistant men's and women's cross-country coach.
Handley, who has played on Under-17, Under-21 and open men's field hockey teams in his native Australia, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies from the University of Newcastle in Australia. He also holds a certificate and advanced certificate in information technology from the Western Institute of TAFE Dubbo in Australia. For the past three years, he has served as camp director/sales and marketing manager for the Lake Greeley Camp/Mount Tone Ski Area in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
"Ray brings a wealth of international field hockey knowledge and playing experience to our program," says Lady Royal head field hockey coach Brenda Brewer. "He took the time to volunteer with the team during the off-season and I am very excited that he will be working with us as our assistant coach this fall. He will certainly be an asset to our team."
Wolfsberger, a native of Moosic, Pennsylvania, is a former cross-country and track and field standout at Moravian College. In cross-country, she won three Middle Atlantic Conference individual titles, two NCAA Division III Mideast regional crowns and earned all-America honors three times, which include two runner-up finishes at the NCAA Division III championships.
Her efforts are just as impressive in track and field. A seven-time all-American, she won the 1500-meter run at the 2001 NCAA indoor championships and finished runner-up in the same event at the 2002 NCAA outdoor meet. This past spring, she was voted first-team Verizon Academic all-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
"The student-athletes at The University of Scranton are going to benefit tremendously from learning from a runner of Heidi's caliber," says first-year head coach Bill King. "She offers a unique perspective, having just competed at the highest level of Division III. Her experience and knowledge can only benefit our program."
