Men’s Basketball: MISERICORDIA HANDS ROYALS FOURTH STRAIGHT LOSS, 70-52, BEHIND GAME-HIGH 27-POINT EFFORT BY CORLISS; SCRANTON GUILTY OF 25 TURNOVERS AND OUT-REBOUNDED BY 46-26 MARGIN
SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton was guilty of 25 turnovers in dropping its fourth straight game, a 70-52 decision to College Misericordia in non-conference action Monday afternoon at the John J. Long, S.J., Center.
Senior forward Ed Corliss (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) inflicted most of the damage by scoring 22 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as the Cougars improved to 3-2 on the season. Senior guard Kyle Watkins (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) and sophomore forward Josh Kendrick (Milton, Pa./Warrior Run) added 14 and 11 points, respectively, as Misericordia dominated play in the pivot by holding a 46-26 advantage in rebounding. Freshman guard Mike McGowan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) led the Royals, now 1-5, with 17 points, tying his season-high, and freshman forward Patrick Clabby (Middletown, N.J./Middletown) had eight points, three rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Tied 7-7 early in the first-half, the Cougars, behind five points by Kendrick and four by Watkins, went on a 16-5 run to take a 23-12 lead with 8:32 left before halftime. Scranton’s Mike Riccobono (Chester, N.J./Mendham) buried a 3-pointer with 2:36 remaining to spark a 7-2 spurt to cut the Cougars’ lead to seven, 31-24, by intermission. Kendrick and Watkins combined for 18 first-half points to lead Misericordia.
Corliss took over the game in the second half. He scored eight points during a 17-9 spurt in the opening nine minutes as Misericordia extended the lead to 15, 48-33. The Cougars’ lead grew to 20 points three minutes later, and their largest lead was 21, 70-49, with 1:44 left on a 3-pointer by freshman forward Dan Liuzzo (Scranton, Pa./Bishop Hannan).
Misericorida connected on 13 of 28 field goal attempts (46.4 percent) in the second half to shake off a 12-for-35 effort (34.3 percent) in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Cougars also pulled down 19 rebounds on the offensive end. Scranton shot 47.8 percent from the field in the second half to finish 43.8 percent for the game, but the Royals had only two rebounds on the offensive end.
The Royals will take on the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College this Wednesday, December 17, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, before breaking for the holidays.
