Women’s Basketball: PIERANGELI SCORES 1000TH CAREER POINT AS 5TH-RANKED LADY ROYALS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT GAME, 73-51 OVER COLBY COLLEGE AT CRUZIN CLASSIC

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—Senior guard Kate Pierangeli (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) scored a game-high 21 points, including the 1000th of her career, to lead The University of Scranton to its fifth straight win, a 73-51 victory over Colby College in the opening round of the Cruzin Classic.

Junior forward Tara Gemmel (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) connected on 6 of 7 shots from the field to score 17 points and senior guard Katie Dougherty (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) added 15 points, four assists and five steals as the 5th-ranked Lady Royals improved to 5-0. Laura Williamson, Alanna Balboni and Cassie Green scored nine points apiece to pace Colby College, now 3-3.

The Lady Royals, who shot 51.9 percent from the field in the first half to take a 31-22 lead at intermission, pressured the White Mules’ into 28 turnovers.

Pierangeli is now the 20th player in University of Scranton women’s basketball history to score 1000 career points. She is 19th on the Lady Royals’ all-time list with 1015 career points.

Scranton will take on the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College tomorrow afternoon beginning at 12:00 noon.
