Women’s Basketball: DOUGHERTY, KANE COMBINE FOR 30 POINTS AS HOT-SHOOTING LADY ROYALS DOWN RANDOLPH-MACON, 85-53, IN CRUZIN CLASSIC THURSDAY AFTERNOON

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—Senior guard Katie Dougherty (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) connected on 6 of 7 shots from the field to score 16 points and junior forward Maura Kane (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional) came off the bench to add a season-high 14 to lead The University of Scranton to an 85-53 victory over Randolph-Macon College at Cruzin Classic Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Kelly Lewandowski (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) came off the bench to score nine points and pull down 10 rebounds—both career-highs—and junior forward Tara Gemmel (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) and freshman guard Allison Matt (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) chipped in nine points apiece as the 5th-ranked Lady Royals shot 57.7 percent (15 of 26) from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play to put the game out of reach by halftime, 41-22. For the game, Scranton connected on 29 of 58 attempts (49.2 percent). Randolph-Macon, which shot only 29.4 percent for the game (20 of 68) and fell to 5-4 on the season, was led by Megan Silva with a game-high 21 points.

The Lady Royals, opening the season 6-0 for the third time in the last four years, also took advantage of the free throw line by canning 20 of 25 attempts (80 percent), including 14 for 17 (82.4 percent) in the second half. Senior guard Kate Pierangeli (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), who scored her 1000th career point in yesterday’s 73-51 victory over Colby College, scored eight points, handed out a game-high 10 assists, and made four steals. Kane’s 14-point effort was two shy of her career-high 16 points against Lycoming College on January 23, 2002.

Scranton will break for the upcoming holidays before returning home on Friday and Saturday, January 2-3, to host Rowan University, Pitt-Greensburg and Hartwick College in the second Diversified Invitational at the John J. Long, S.J., Center. The proceeds from the tournament will benefit the St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in Scranton.
