In order to make a smooth transition to campus life, you will need to start preparing weeks in advance. Most colleges conduct summer orientation sessions and will mail you information regarding your class schedule, residence hall room assignment, parking sticker, health insurance, and meal plans. Sometimes you can even buy your textbooks on the Web.

Complete as many transactions as you can before you arrive. You should also decide how you will handle money while at school. Be cautious of the many credit card offers you will receive — especially if you have never had a card in your name before.

If you are planning to live on campus, it is a good idea to contact your roommate before you head off to school. That first day will be easier if the connection between the two of you has already been established. You’ll also be able to decide the important things, such as which one of you will bring the television set and which one of you will bring the telephone!
