How much can they realistically afford? How much debt are you each willing to accumulate? If you want to apply early, then your parents will need to estimate what their tax return might look like by February in the year you will be applying. Financial aid offices depend on that information.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help as you wander through the maze of financing options and financial aid applications. Call your high school. Call the financial aid and admissions offices of the colleges you are considering. Attend financial aid seminars. Research financial aid options on the Web. Take advantage of the help that is all around you.

Some families assume that they are not eligible, and they don’t bother to apply for financial aid. These families often are eligible. Be sure to apply for aid at all of the colleges to which you are applying. Each college will offer different scholarship opportunities that you may be able to take advantage of by completing the appropriate applications. In addition, completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will determine your eligibility for both federal and state assistance.

Unfortunately, too many students lose out because they missed the application deadline. Don’t let that happen to you.
