 Workshop Descriptions

 Addiction and the Family:  Both alcoholism and drug addiction are often called a "family illness," negatively affecting anyone living with the alcoholic/addict.  This workshop will provide accurate information on the often misunderstood disease of addiction while also exploring the effects on family members.  Resources for support and help will also be explored.

Recognizing suicide as a public health problem has led to an increase in research, resulting in more effective treatment and prevention recommendations to help save lives.

When stress is not handled well, it can have disastrous effects on our health, home life and/or work life.   Soldiers have to function under severe conditions where it is crucial that personal stress is handled and not taken out on the individual,  group or at home. Learn some of the ways soldiers have found to balance the demands of home and service.

 Healthy Choices: Tips for Reducing Cancer Risk: Get informed on the risks, myths, and development of cancer. Learn practical tips on how to limit your risk for getting cancer.

 Knitting for Good: Prayer Shawl Ministry: Learn how to knit a prayer shawl.  Bring size 13 knitting needles that are long (13.5 or 14 inches) and 3 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun yarn to the workshop.  Prayer Shawls are given to people who are grieving, sick or who just need comfort.  The University has a prayer shawl group that meets weekly on campus.  Join the group.

 Lackawanna River Heritage Trail: The trail stretches over 70 miles through the heart of Scranton providing excellent recreational landscapes.  My Garden Experiences: Paul has been featured on WNEP’s successful Home and Backyard TV program for well over 500 episodes now.  He is also a gardening correspondent for PBS’s Victory Garden.  In his lively and engaging way, Paul will chat about his personal style of gardening and what he’s learned in his first 50 years and what he hopes to be doing in the next 50.  Effort less, environmental, edible and extra-ordinary are some of the characteristics of a great garden.

 Nia: A Dance Movement Class:  Participate in a class based on the Nia technique and composed of a variety of dance, martial arts and healing arts movements to bring a complete workout of the mind, body, and soul.
