University Plans 2016 Commencement Events
The University of Scranton class of 2016 banner is introduced at freshman convocation in August of 2012. Commencement ceremonies for the class of 2016 will be held this weekend.
The University of Scranton will host numerous events in honor of the graduating class of 2016, culminating with commencement ceremonies for master’s and doctoral degree candidates on Saturday, May 28, and for undergraduate students on Sunday, May 29.
Events planned include, on Friday, May 27, Class Night at which undergraduates will be recognized for academic achievement, leadership and service. Class Night begins at 8 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center.
On Saturday at 8 a.m., the Physical Therapy Department will hold a graduation awards ceremony in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center.
Academic award recipients for the University’s master’s and doctoral programs will be recognized at a ceremony at 8:45 a.m. in the Heritage Room of the Weinberg Memorial Library.
At 9:30 a.m., the University will conduct a pinning ceremony for nursing graduates in the Long Center. A reception for families and friends will follow.
At 10:45 a.m., the commencement ceremony for master’s and doctoral degree candidates will take place in the Byron Recreation Complex. Joseph P. Bannon, M.D. ’83, chairman of the Department of Surgery at Regional Hospital of Scranton, will serve as the principal speaker. He will receive an honorary degree at the ceremony along with and Mary Lou and James L. Burne, D.D.S. ’63, founders of Family to Family Thanksgiving Food Basket Program.
Immediately following the ceremony, a reception for master’s and doctoral degree recipients and their guests will be held on the Alumni Memorial Green.
At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, ROTC Army cadets will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during a ceremony in the Houlihan McLean Center. A reception will follow.
At 2:15 p.m., the University will also host a reception for members of the class of 2016 who have made long-term service commitments following graduation in the McDonnell Room of the DeNaples Center.
A reception for Alumni Legacy graduates and their families will take place at the atrium of Loyola Science Center at 2 p.m. A photo of the Legacy graduates and their alumni parents will take place at 2:45 p.m.
At 4 p.m., the Baccalaureate Mass will be held in the Byron Recreation Complex. University of Scranton President Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., will serve as the main celebrant and homilist.
Also on Saturday, at 8 p.m., a President’s Reception for graduates and parents will be held in the Byron Recreation Complex. Tickets are required to attend.
On Sunday, at 8 a.m., the Occupational Therapy Department will hold a graduation awards ceremony in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center.
Also on Sunday, the University will confer bachelor’s and associate’s degrees during its noon commencement ceremony at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre. Sister Mary Scullion, R.S.M., co-founder, executive director and president of Project HOME (Housing, Opportunities for Employment, Medical Care, Education), will serve as the principal speaker. She and University benefactor and former trustee Margaret M. Condron, Ph.D., will receive honorary degrees at the ceremony.
The University of Scranton will live video stream five of its 2016 commencement events. Events to be live streamed are: Class Night on May 27 at 8 p.m.; Nurse Pinning Ceremony on May 28 at 9:30 a.m.; Graduate Commencement on May 28 at 10:45 a.m.; the Baccalaureate Mass on May 28 at 4 p.m.; and the Undergraduate Commencement on May 29 at noon. The live video stream and subsequent archived video can be seen at www.scranton.edu/eventslive. The stream will not become available until 15 minutes prior to each event. An archived video will be available immediately following each event and will remain available for viewing on this site for 30 days.
