University Police Receive Prestigious Accreditation

Jul 25, 2016

The University of Scranton Police Department is among just six state institutions of higher education accredited by the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC). Less than three percent of police agencies in Pennsylvania are PLEAC accredited.

Accreditation by PLEAC is intended to help law enforcement agencies evaluate and improve their overall performance through the creation of standard operating procedures and policies to ensure continual compliance with established statewide accreditation standards. University of Scranton Police met, and are in compliance with, all 135 professional standards judged through PLEAC accreditation.

“The Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Program was designed and developed by professional law enforcement executives to provide a reasonable and cost-effective plan for the professionalization of law enforcement agencies within the Commonwealth,” according to the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association website.

Chief of Police William Kelly of the PLEAC Commission formally presented the University with a certificate of accreditation at a brief ceremony held on campus recently.

University of Scranton Police Officers have full law enforcement powers, including the authority to make arrests for criminal violations on and in the immediate and adjacent vicinity of University property.
